Ion Zupcu “Painted Cubes”
One of our favorites from the Houston Fotofest was Ion Zupcu. He has a current exhibit through May 28 at ClampArt in Chelsea.
The presentation of the series of cube photos is simple but very effective. The images are a return to the abstract expressionism modality of the late forties and fifties with a modern technology sheen.
Deceivingly small, the actual cubes Zupcu photographs are over-painted with thick brushstrokes, bringing forth their sculptural qualities and heightening their depth—especially when they are introduced to soft natural lighting.
A very nice update to a look and feel from a classic time period in modern art.
A good exhibit on your “Must See” list.
