Richard Gordon
Tom Gitterman has passed along this difficult news:
It is with great sadness I write to let you know that Richard Gordon died October 6th at his home in Berkeley, CA.
Though we were friendly for many years, it was only over the past year after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer that we got to be close. I feel unqualified to write a proper obituary but I would like to honor him by sharing a few words.
As many of you know that even though his chemotherapy stopped working this summer, Richard was able to make it to New York for his opening in September. The gallery was filled with friends from all periods of his life; it was a testament to the type of person he was.
Beyond being a great photographer, Richard was a great writer. There are few that have the gift in more than one medium. His writing was a lot like his photography and thus an extension of the man he was, direct with a great wit.
Before leaving New York, Richard and I had the opportunity to sit together and talk about his life. As he was telling me about significant dates and events, I realized he was contextualizing everything as it related to his life with his wife, Meredith and his son, Jesse.
We will miss him.
Tom
The Richard Gordon exhibit continues at the Gitterman Gallery through November 17.
