On Site: Best of AIPAD Photography Show, New York

In Art Fair, Exhibits, Gallerist, Gallery, Photo Print Collector on March 19, 2010 at 8:15 am

This year’s AIPAD show is underway (through Sunday) with 70 dealers showing the best in classic and contemporary photographic prints at the Armory. We were impressed at the quality and diversity of offerings. As our focus in Black and White works of art, we are providing a brief list of “must see” galleries exhibiting at this show.

In no particular order:

  • Howard Greenberg
  • Etherton Gallery
  • Gitterman Gallery
  • Vintage Works
  • Stephen Daiter Gallery
  • Catherine Edelman Gallery
  • Scott Nichols Gallery
  • Peter Fetterman
  • Gallery 339
  • Laurence Miller Gallery
  • Winter Works On Paper
  • Gallery 19th/21st
  • Stephen L. Clark

The depth and breadth of quality offerings or a particular set of images that excites the viewer/collector is the criteria for making our “Best of Show” list. Cut through the noise and make sure you pick up a floor map and catalog at registration. See these excellent dealers now.

Our congratulations to these galleries and AIPAD for putting on a great show despite the obvious current economic constraints.

Noteworthy: Michael Foley On What He Looks For In A New Artist

Lydia Panas

We had the pleasure of attending a panel discussion last fall where Michael Foley was speaking on the subject of how artists can establish gallery representation. One of the strong recommendations he made was for a new artist to participate in one of the portfolio reviews held during photo art fairs around the country.

The current issue of PDN has a good article expanding on Mr. Foley’s thoughts about new artists’ aspirations and should be of interest to a number of our photographer readers. His current focus is Lydia Panas.

Through his 20-minute conversation with her at the review he felt that she was “completely dedicated to the medium and the project she was working on, and it was fleshed out.”

Not only was Panas able to speak about the work she was showing, she also told Foley about her next project. “Someone who is solid in their vision but is still exploring their subjects, those are the people I really want to work with …

Michael operates an impressive gallery in New York City with a solid roster of talent. He has worked in great company during his career with associations in the past with other dealers ,such as, Howard Greenberg.

See what else he has to say about what he looks for: Michael Foley
