“Angler Fish” – Lori Nix, “Grande Galerie” – Matthew Pillsbury

Now through April 10, at Clampart in Chelsea, is a group show, with both Black and White as well as color photography. The theme was inspired by Lori Nix’s innovative Black and White diorama’s from her “Natural History” series.

The multiple artists explore animal related themes, some more successfully than others. The clear winner in the exhibit is the Matthew Pillsbury image of the Grand Gallery of Evolution taken at the museum in Paris. With fine detail and striking use of light and shadow, Pillsbury manages to transport the viewer into another world.

Whether imaging the dioramas and displays found in the public areas of the museums or the storage facilities and offices off limits to visitors, the artworks question what motivates us to collect… be it knowledge, ownership, or facile curiosity.
