Mother Nature is finally beginning to provide its annual autumnal chill, meaning there’s no better place to head that your nearby art gallery.  That means for anyone in the West Lawn/Reading, visiting the Yocum Institute to see Patricia Scialo at the end of October sounds like a perfect fall evening.

Established in 1934 by Chester Wittell as the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts, the Institute opened its doors with 3 music students. Under Lila Lerch, the first managing director, the Institute grew to over 300 students and expanded its offerings to include music, dance, theater, and visual art instruction. An arts-based preschool and kindergarten were added and the Institute became licensed by the state. It is also home to the Yocum Gallery, a venue for exhibits and performances, the Berks Art Alliance, and Art Goes to School.

About Scialo:

My continued concentration with alternative photographic processes has taken on a mixed-media approach.  When altering the surface of a photographic print I use materials such as oil, graphite, encaustic and found-materials for embedding.

These techniques allow me to build layers, adding depth to the photographic imagery. Hand work is vital to the print-making process.

Rediscovered through the lens of my camera, the subject is often transformed, recreated, with the intention to give the viewer a desire to pause and look closer.

Light is the element of design that catches my eye when looking at subjects.  Light allows me to enhance the subject and create a point of interest. Light allows the magic to happen when processing with photographic chemistry.

Scialo’s exhibit at the Yocum exhibit will open Friday, October 26th, with a reception running from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibit will be on display until December 1st, 2018.
