For those who’ve happened to read Black & White Gallerist over the years, there’s a good chance that you’ve noticed updates on what Susan Spiritus Gallery in Irvine, CA, is up to. Recently, the gallery sent out a little newsletter on how to describe black and white photography and we decided that we wanted to share it with the masses.

Simple and Elegant: Black and White

Many words come to mind when we describe a black and white photograph with several being simple, elegant, minimal, classic and sometimes stark. The list is undeniably endless, but in truth, much depends upon who is doing the viewing. A photograph can be described with any of those words as well as complex, abstract and multidimensional.

I’ve put together a collection of photographs that I believe are worthy of these descriptive words and are, in my opinion, simple and elegant gelatin silver photographs.

This newsletter will present work by Andre KerteszHengki KoentjoroPaul CaponigroManuel Alvarez Bravo and George Tice,

Indonesia is a beautiful and unique part of the world that not many get to encounter during their lifetime. After checking out the work of Hengki Koentjoro, it’s even more stunning, and perhaps provides added motivation to make a trip to the region.

We are thrilled to welcome Hengki Koentjoro to the Susan Spiritus Gallery.

Born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, Hengki is an accomplished photographer, specializing in capturing the spectral domain that lies amidst the shades of black and white.

Reverie in nature takes form in the black and white of Hengki Koentjoro’s photographs. In his striking signature simplicity, Hengki delicately preserves the dreamy awe in ordinary objects above and under water.

Susan Spiritus Gallery is now in possession of a wide variety of Koentjoro’s work, so if you’re enraptured by the Indonesian’s eye for his nation’s landscape, you’ll have a bevy of images to choose from.
